Bevan’s Book

INTEGRATED ENGLISH: Teaching Academics in a CTE Classroom is the compilation of 20-plus years of Integrated English teaching experience in a Career & Technical Education classroom. In short, this book will help teachers integrate more academics into CTE classes. Included are 50 assignment ideas with ELA learning objective alignments, co-teaching tips, scheduling advice, lesson/handout drafting, and valuable tidbits all from an innovative “OG” Integrated English instructor!

Kenneth G. Bevan is a Fulbright Scholar, an author of sports biographies, and a wedding/event DJ. More importantly for this venture, he has been an “Integrated English Instructor” at Capital Region Career & Technical School in Albany, NY for over two decades. Back in 2002, Bevan helped create and pilot his school’s attempt at having students achieve English credit while working in their technical field of study (a push-in class with Bevan at the helm called Technical Communication & Portfolio.) His early efforts in identifying ELA Standards in a sample of CTE classes came by focusing on real-world application and Career & Financial Management (CFM) lessons. His goal was simple, “…To make students look more valuable to prospective employers.” This simplistic integrated approach was a success, and TCP: Integrated English, a handful of classes, evolved into a full-blown, campus-wide Integrated Academics Program. A dozen teachers were hired to add English, Math, and Science lessons/credits into all of their CTE programs culminating in a masterwork portfolio highlighting each students’ great work and skills.

Bevan has worked with countless innovative and gifted teachers in many academic disciplines and technical fields of study. He continues to prepare CTE students for successful futures encouraging lifelong learning and to “find the fun in everything.”
